Taiwan opens new cloud center to support its sovereign AI plan
Taiwan has launched a new cloud computing center in Tainan as part of its national push to develop “sovereign AI”.
The facility features the Nano 4 supercomputer, currently the largest in Taiwan, which runs on 1,760 Nvidia H200 chips and 144 Nvidia Blackwell chips, according to the National Science and Technology Council.
This center is intended to support AI research, high-performance computing, telecommunications, cloud services, and digital content.
The initiative is part of Taiwan’s “Ten Major AI Infrastructure Projects,” announced in July 2025.

Implications, context, and why it matters.
- Officials announced Nano 4 without saying who can use it. NCHC (Taiwan’s National Center for High-Performance Computing, a state-backed research computing provider) has said TAIWANIA AI cloud platform (NCHC’s public compute service) will split roughly 50% for government and academic projects, with the rest for industry uses such as financial technology or intelligent manufacturing 1.
- Nano 5 serves industry and government users 1. Academia and research groups can use it. Nano 4 lacks published pricing or allocation; startups can’t compare costs or access models. They need benchmarks against H200 plans on AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure.
- Legacy NCHC systems like Taiwania 3 use one-time password (OTP) login and scheduling to physical nodes, so Nano 4 may keep that model 1. Jobs run as batch queues, not autoscaling. That clashes with cloud elasticity and could deter startups that need on-demand scaling.
- Taiwan’s Ten Major AI Infrastructure Projects will open tenders for compute; storage; cooling; power; networking; cybersecurity; and Machine Learning Operations (MLOps) platforms.
- NCHC runs a 9.4 Petabyte (PB) parallel file system and an InfiniBand HDR100 (a high-speed data center interconnect) 100 Gbps network 1. Specs open bids for storage; interconnects; or orchestration for multi-petaflop (quadrillion-operations-per-second) setups.
- Hardware suppliers should track National Science and Technology Council (the government science and technology policy agency) procurement portals. Nano 4 uses 1,904 GPUs, so follow-on buys for power distribution units; liquid cooling; or data center builds likely span nine projects.
