Taiwan launches first satellite in new Earth-observation program
Taiwan has launched the first satellite of its Formosat-8 constellation from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, according to Taiwan Space Agency (TASA).
The FS-8A, named the Chi Po-lin Satellite, was sent into orbit by SpaceX’s Transporter-15 rocket at 2:44 a.m. Taipei time after a brief delay to avoid a possible collision.
It is one of eight planned satellites aimed at providing higher-resolution images for disaster response and security.
TASA said it is expected to capture ground details at a resolution of 1 meter, improving to 0.7 meters after processing.
The launch had been postponed five times due to scheduling conflicts, a US government shutdown, and additional preparations.
The Formosat-8 constellation is scheduled for full deployment by 2031.
