Taiwan launches $2.71b relief package over US tariffs
The Executive Yuan has announced an NT$88 billion (US$2.71 billion) relief package to assist businesses affected by United States tariffs.
The program features relaxed application procedures and eligibility requirements amid uncertain global economic conditions.
Businesses that experience a revenue decline of at least 10% during specific periods in 2024, compared to the same periods in 2023, may qualify for relief loans.
Exporters will benefit from lower loan interest rates, with projections indicating that up to 24,000 businesses could receive assistance, according to Executive Yuan Secretary-General Kung Ming-hsin.
The relief initiative also includes agricultural financing, which is expected to assist up to 15,600 households.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Taiwan’s proactive economic protection shows historical continuity
Taiwan’s NT$88 billion relief package follows a pattern of government intervention during economic challenges that has proven effective over decades.
In 2016, Taiwan implemented a similar $1.9 billion aid package to rescue struggling shipping companies like Evergreen Marine and Yang Ming when they faced combined losses exceeding $580 million, preventing a collapse similar to South Korea’s Hanjin Shipping 1.
During the 1998 Asian financial crisis, Taiwan’s government provided financial relief to businesses facing defaults, helping the economy maintain nearly 5% growth while neighboring countries experienced negative growth 2.
This latest package demonstrates Taiwan’s consistent approach to economic stabilization through government intervention, with specific measures tailored to current challenges, particularly the relaxed eligibility criteria that reduced the revenue decline threshold from 15% to 10% 3.
The government’s commitment to maintaining economic stability remains unchanged even as specific threats evolve from regional financial crises to global trade tensions.
2️⃣ Relief package reflects critical role of SMEs in Taiwan’s economic resilience
The substantial allocation for SMEs in the relief package highlights their importance to Taiwan’s economic foundation.
SMEs constitute over 90% of Taiwan’s businesses and employ nearly 80% of the workforce, contributing more than 40% to the country’s GDP according to government data 4.
