Taiwan greenlights TSMC’s US investment in 2nm chip plant

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) has been granted permission by Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs to invest in 2-nanometer chip production facilities in the United States.

The Taiwanese government previously restricted local chipmakers from establishing advanced chip production plants overseas to safeguard Taiwan’s technological leadership.

Economic Affairs Minister J.W. Kuo announced that TSMC could invest between US$28 billion and US$30 billion in a 2-nanometer production plant in the US.

The company plans to set up a second facility in the US to manufacture 2-nanometer and 3-nanometer chips, with operations expected to start in 2028.

Taiwan’s government is focused on strengthening the nation’s position in the global semiconductor market, collaborating with countries such as the US, Germany, Japan, and the Philippines.
