Taiwan exports surged 52% as AI demand stayed strong
Taiwan’s Ministry of Finance said on June 10 that exports rose 51.7% year on year to US$78.48 billion in May, marking the second-highest monthly total on record.
The ministry said demand for AI-related products continued to support export growth.
The result marked 31 straight months of export growth. Imports climbed 54.9% to a record US$60.57 billion, leaving Taiwan with a trade surplus of US$17.91 billion.
Exports of information and communications technology and video and audio products increased 75.2% to US$34.84 billion.
Electronic component exports rose 56% to a record US$26.84 billion, including US$25.50 billion in semiconductor sales.
The US was Taiwan’s biggest export market in May at US$22.94 billion, ahead of China and Hong Kong at US$19.03 billion, and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations bloc at US$18.77 billion.
The ranking adds to a broader shift in Taiwan’s trade flows.
Its shipments to the US hit a record in August 2024, surpassing the previous high for exports to China in 2021 amid strong demand for AI-related products in the US.
