Taiwan is reconsidering its stance on nuclear energy as electricity demand from the chipmaking industry rises.

Premier Cho Jung-tai said in an interview that new nuclear technologies might be discussed if there is agreement on safety and waste management.

This shows a possible policy change for Taiwan, which has opposed nuclear power due to safety concerns after the 2011 Fukushima disaster in Japan.

The incident led to a decline in public support for nuclear energy in Taiwan.

Taiwan’s reassessment is partly due to energy security concerns amid regional tensions, particularly with China.
