Taiwan chip testing firm CHPT posts record $42.5m revenue

Chunghwa Precision Test Technology (CHPT), a Taiwanese chip testing and wafer probing company, reported record revenue of NT$1.36 billion, or US$42.5 million, as demand rose for load boards used in final testing for chips used in high-performance computing devices.

Revenue was up 5.43% from Q4 and 18.26% year-on-year, while non-recurring engineering income from offering engineering verification services for application processors also supported growth, the company said.

CHPT said it would invest NT$3.58 billion (US$111 million) in a new factory in Taoyuan’s Pingzhen District, due to start operations in H2 2028, and has moved to lease a manufacturing facility in the short term to add capacity.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

The company’s performance reverses 2023’s downturn

  • In the first quarter of 2023, CHPT reported a net loss attributable to shareholders of NT$31 million and negative earnings per share (EPS) of NT$-0.94 during an industry-wide inventory adjustment 1.
  • Revenue shifted toward North America last year. The company said the region replaced Taiwan as the top source, contributing about 60% of total revenue versus 30% in 2023, as it targets major AI chip suppliers 2.
  • High-performance computing (HPC) applications, mainly AI chips, rose to 42.5% of revenue in the second quarter from 21% a year earlier 3.
  • CHPT faces a patent infringement lawsuit from Italy’s Technoprobe SpA, a semiconductor wafer-probe card supplier. Technoprobe seeks NT$31.65 million in damages after an interlocutory first-instance judgment by Taiwan’s Intellectual and Commercial Court, and CHPT said it would appeal 4.

CHPT’s record quarter amid a capacity crunch among specialized AI supply chain suppliers

  • Demand in parts of the AI hardware ecosystem exceeds specialized supplier capacity. The company’s president said CHPT factory employees worked overtime during holidays to keep up 2.
  • Factories run near full capacity. Separately, CHPT said order visibility now spans eight to nine months, above the semiconductor industry average of three months 3.
  • The imbalance supports pricing leverage for niche suppliers. CHPT trades at a high price-to-sales ratio of about 22.94 (ttm) 5.
  • Scaling AI hardware also depends on specialized testing interfaces, including load boards used in final testing, that validate advanced processors 6.
