Taiwan boosts smart robotics industry with $664m plan

The Executive Yuan has approved a plan to grow Taiwan’s smart robotics industry.

The project will receive a total budget of NT$20 billion (US$664.09 million), comes from the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) and the National Development Fund.

The initiative aims to increase the production value of professional service robots from NT$4 billion (US$132.47 million) to NT$50 billion (US$1.66 billion) over the next five years.

The NSTC proposed the plan to address labor shortages and meet the demand for elderly care.

The plan has three main goals: fostering robotics startups, increasing domestic production, and promoting intelligent robots in labor-intensive industries.

Strategies will include developing key technologies, setting cybersecurity standards, and cultivating talent.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Taiwan’s robotics plan builds on decades of industrial development

Taiwan’s latest robotics initiative represents a significant expansion of efforts dating back to the 1980s, when the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) first developed industrial robots priced at approximately $5,500, roughly one-third the cost of U.S. and Japanese alternatives 1.

This strategic price advantage reflects Taiwan’s historical approach to technology development, where it initially competed on cost before moving up the value chain, as seen in its semiconductor industry that now produces 70% of the world’s integrated circuits 2.

The establishment of dedicated robotics centers in Tainan follows Taiwan’s proven innovation cluster model, similar to how the Hsinchu Science Park has successfully housed over 400 high-tech companies that foster collaboration between industry and academia 2.

The NT$20 billion (US$662 million) investment combines direct funding and venture capital support, reflecting Taiwan’s long-standing approach of using public-private partnerships to develop strategic industries while nurturing startups in emerging sectors.

2️⃣ Demographic crisis drives Taiwan’s automation imperative

Taiwan faces a severe demographic challenge with projections showing its working-age-to-dependent ratio will collapse to just 1.1:1 by 2070, creating an urgent need for automation solutions beyond just industrial competitiveness 3.

The focus on professional service robots, especially in medical care and hospitality, directly addresses Taiwan’s aging population crisis and aligns with global trends where service robotics is experiencing rapid growth, particularly in healthcare applications 4.
