Taiwan boosts 2025 GDP to 4.5% driven by AI demand
Taiwan’s government has raised its 2025 GDP growth forecast to 4.5%, up from 3.1% in May, due to strong exports and private investment linked to global demand for AI.
Officials said the economy has remained resilient despite US tariff hikes and potential semiconductor duties.
Improved global outlook, easing concerns over AI-related disruptions, and changes in US policy supporting AI infrastructure have contributed to the revised forecast.
The government projects real exports will rise 23.7% in 2025 and real private investment will increase by 9.9%.
Taiwan’s merchandise exports are expected to reach US$589.2 billion in 2025, a 24% rise year-on-year, and US$602.1 billion in 2026, up 2.2%.
However, domestic consumption is weak, with the 2025 private consumption growth forecast cut to 0.85%, the lowest in four years.
For 2026, GDP growth is expected to reach 2.8%, with per capita GDP projected to exceed US$40,000 for the first time.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Taiwan’s semiconductor dominance provides economic resilience against trade tensions
The sharp GDP revision demonstrates how Taiwan’s specialized position in global tech supply chains creates economic momentum that withstands geopolitical pressures.
Taiwan produces over 60% of the world’s raw semiconductors and more than 90% of the most advanced chips1, giving the island economy strategic leverage even amid rising trade tensions.
This dominance explains why semiconductors received exemptions from the Trump Administration’s 20% tariff on Taiwan imports2, highlighting how certain industries become critical to global supply chains.
The resilience shows in Taiwan’s export projections. Merchandise exports are expected to reach $589.2 billion in 2025, representing a 24.04% increase from the previous year despite ongoing tariff uncertainties.
2️⃣ AI infrastructure buildout drives unprecedented export acceleration
Taiwan’s export growth revision from 8.99% to 24.04% represents one of the most dramatic forecast upgrades in recent economic history, driven by global AI data center construction.
