Taiwan blocks Uber Eats from acquiring Foodpanda

Taiwan’s Fair Trade Commission (FTC) has blocked Uber Eats from acquiring Foodpanda’s delivery business in the island after the decision was made during a committee meeting held Wednesday.

Uber Eats announced its intention to purchase Foodpanda’s Taiwan operations in May, which initiated a regulatory review.

The FTC received full notification materials for the transaction in November, formally starting the review process.

Earlier this month, the FTC raised concerns about potential competition issues, suggesting that the merger could increase market concentration and negatively impact competition.

After a thorough review, the FTC concluded that the anticompetitive risks outweighed any potential benefits, leading to the rejection of the proposed acquisition.

Uber Eats reportedly expressed its willingness to address the FTC’s concerns, but the commission decided against approving the acquisition.
