Taiwan blocks Grab’s $600m Foodpanda deal
Taiwan’s Fair Trade Commission blocked Grab’s proposed acquisition of Delivery Hero’s Foodpanda business in Taiwan, saying the companies’ proposed remedies failed to address concerns that the deal would significantly reduce competition.
Grab said in March that it planned to pay up to US$600 million in cash for the business. The deal was expected to close by the first Q1 2027, subject to regulatory approval. The acquisition would have been Grab’s first expansion outside Southeast Asia.
The ruling follows Taiwan’s earlier block of Uber’s roughly US$950 million bid for Foodpanda Taiwan. Uber later terminated the deal because of regulatory hurdles.
The deal announcements did not specify a breakup fee or an alternative arrangement if regulators rejected the transaction. Delivery Hero still owns the Taiwan business.
