T-Mobile finalizes $4.3b deal to buy US wireless carrier firm

T-Mobile has completed its US$4.3 billion acquisition of UScellular, gaining access to the carrier’s customers, retail stores, and 30% of its spectrum.

UScellular is a wireless carrier based in the United States.

As part of the deal, UScellular customers will stay on their current plans for now and can continue to manage accounts and seek support through the UScellular website and customer service.

UScellular will now operate only as an infrastructure provider, earning revenue by licensing its remaining spectrum and towers.

To gain approval from Trump’s FCC, T-Mobile agreed to gut its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs, following similar actions by Verizon for its Frontier acquisition.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ T-Mobile continues strategic acquisition playbook that built industry challenger

The UScellular deal represents T-Mobile’s latest step in a decades-long acquisition strategy that transformed it from a struggling carrier into America’s network leader.

T-Mobile has consistently grown through targeted purchases, starting with SunCom Wireless for $2.4 billion in 2008 (adding 1.1 million customers), followed by the MetroPCS merger in 2013 that brought 9 million subscribers, and culminating in the Sprint acquisition completed in 2020 12.

Even before this major deal, T-Mobile purchased wireless spectrum from UScellular for $308 million back in 2013 to expand its 4G LTE services 1.

This acquisition pattern reflects CEO John Legere’s “Un-carrier” strategy launched in 2012, which focused on aggressive expansion and customer acquisition to challenge the AT&T and Verizon duopoly 1.

The $4.3 billion UScellular purchase follows the same playbook: acquire customers, retail locations, and crucial spectrum assets to strengthen competitive positioning.

2️⃣ The acquisition reinforces T-Mobile’s emergence as the new network performance leader

T-Mobile’s UScellular purchase comes as the carrier has finally achieved technical superiority over its larger rivals, making consolidation particularly strategic.

Recent Opensignal data shows T-Mobile now outperforms both Verizon and AT&T in nine network performance categories, including average download speeds of 80 Mbit/s compared to slower speeds from competitors 3.
