Swedish VC opens Copenhagen office to target Danish tech

Spintop Ventures, a Swedish early-stage VC firm, has announced its expansion into Denmark with plans for a permanent presence in Copenhagen.

The firm appointed Jasenko Hadzic, previously at BackingMinds, as principal to lead its efforts in the country.

Spintop aims to strengthen its position across the Nordic region, where it targets tech startups.

Spintop has raised four funds and exited portfolio companies through acquisitions by firms such as Cisco, Klarna, and Zynga.

The move reflects growing investor interest in Denmark, especially in areas like climate tech, SaaS, and digital health.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Denmark’s venture capital resilience attracts Nordic fund expansion

Denmark’s contrarian VC performance in 2023 explains why funds like Spintop are establishing permanent presences there.

While European VC investment declined 37% in 2023, Denmark recorded its second-best year for venture capital investment, making it a clear outlier in a challenging funding environment2.

This resilience stems largely from Denmark’s healthtech sector, which raised $835 million across 56 funding rounds, accounting for 58% of the country’s total VC investment2.

The concentration of capital in a mature, specialized sector like healthtech demonstrates why Copenhagen has become strategically attractive for Nordic VCs seeking stable deal flow.

Spintop’s move follows this data-driven logic, as the firm specifically mentions Denmark’s emergence as a priority for investors focused on sectors including digital health1.

2️⃣ Nordic VC firms prioritize deeper national footprints over regional strategies

Spintop’s Copenhagen expansion reflects a broader shift among Nordic venture capital firms toward establishing dedicated country presences rather than managing the region remotely.

The appointment of Jasenko Hadzic, who founded multiple Danish ecosystem initiatives including The Investor Series and Nordic Startup Conference, signals the importance of local network access in venture capital1.
