Swedish VC firm Norrsken pledges $348m for European AI startups

The Norrsken Foundation of Sweden has pledged €300 million (around US$348 million) to support European startups using AI to tackle challenges in climate, health, food, education, and society.

Founded in 2016 by Klarna co-founder Niklas Adalberth, the foundation manages several venture capital and investment funds with an asset base exceeding US$1 billion.

This funding comes as venture capital interest grows.

Startups raised over US$80 billion in the first quarter of 2025, a 30% increase compared to the previous quarter, according to EY.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ AI funding is shifting from business efficiency to social impact

Norrsken’s €300 million commitment comes amid a larger redirection of venture capital toward socially impactful AI applications, challenging the current landscape where most AI investments focus on business optimization.

In 2024, AI and machine learning deals captured 46.4% of US venture capital funding, with major rounds including OpenAI’s $6.6 billion raise, showing the financial enthusiasm for artificial intelligence 1.

While general AI funding is booming, capturing $59.6 billion globally in Q1 2025 and representing 53% of total VC funding, most investments have targeted enterprise applications rather than solutions for societal challenges 2.

This funding imbalance is what Norrsken aims to address, with Agate Freimane noting that “so far we are mainly using [AI] to optimize clicks and automate emails” despite its potential to tackle more meaningful problems.

The trend aligns with forecasts from industry experts who predict that 2025 will see significant capital directed toward AI applications in healthcare, climate tech, and other impact sectors rather than just business efficiency tools 3.

2️⃣ AI offers untapped potential for climate and food security solutions

Norrsken’s focus on climate and food as key investment areas reflects growing evidence that AI can provide transformative solutions for these interconnected global challenges.

Global food insecurity has doubled since 2020, affecting over 300 million people, with climate change exacerbating these challenges by disrupting agricultural production, presenting an urgent opportunity for AI intervention 4.

AI technologies can enhance agricultural sustainability through improved data systems that monitor soil health, water availability, and weather trends, while also optimizing supply chains to reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with food production 4.
