Swedish firm Motorica secures $5.3m for AI character animation
Motorica, a Stockholm-based company specializing in generative animation, has secured €5 million (US$5.29 million) in seed funding.
The funding round, announced on June 24, 2025, was led by Angular Ventures with participation from Luminar Ventures.
The investment will support the expansion of Motorica’s AI platform for character animation.
With the new funding, Motorica plans to expand integrations and enhance its motion library.
The company plans to invest further in research and development to enhance workflows in animation production by automating repetitive tasks.
Motorica was founded in 2020 by Gustav Henter and Simon Alexanderson, who developed a deep generative model for motion synthesis in 2019.
The company also aims to establish partnerships with game engines and VFX studios while hiring across engineering, animation, and customer success teams.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Animation’s quantum leap follows a century-long pattern of technological revolutions
Motorica’s generative AI represents the latest milestone in animation’s evolution, continuing a century-old pattern where technological breakthroughs dramatically expand creative possibilities.
This follows the historical trajectory from Émile Cohl’s hand-drawn “Fantasmagorie” (1908) through Disney’s multiplane camera innovation (1937) to Pixar’s groundbreaking computer animation in “Toy Story” (1995) 1.
Each technological leap transformed animation economics. For example, Disney’s xerography technique (1961) significantly reduced production costs, and Motorica now claims to cut animation time by 99% 2.
The most disruptive animation technologies have consistently preserved creative control while eliminating mechanical drudgery, as Motorica aims to do by freeing animators from “technical grunt work” to focus on creative performance.
These breakthroughs initially complement rather than replace existing techniques, as evidenced by how both traditional and CGI animation continue to coexist decades after “Toy Story” revolutionized the industry.
2️⃣ AI-driven game development represents a massive market opportunity with economic ripple effects
