Swedish fintech firm Klarna cuts workforce by 40%

Swedish fintech firm Klarna has cut its workforce by about 40%, dropping from roughly 5,000 to nearly 3,000 employees, according to CEO Sebastian Siemiatkowski.

This reduction partly results from adopting AI technology and a hiring freeze that started in 2023.

Klarna partnered with OpenAI and launched an AI customer service assistant, replacing work done by 700 agents.

Klarna’s IPO prospectus showed a decline in staff from 5,527 in December 2022 to 3,422 in December 2023.

Siemiatkowski also said natural attrition, which reduces 15-20% of employees annually, contributed to the decrease.

Despite the hiring freeze, Klarna still lists 10 open roles, mainly in Europe.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Financial services lead AI-driven workforce transformation

Klarna’s 40% staff reduction is part of a broader financial industry trend, with analysts projecting AI could generate $1 trillion in savings for banks by 2030 through a 22% cut in operating costs 1.

This transformation is happening across the industry, with approximately 2.5 million U.S. financial employees already exposed to AI technologies 2.

Customer service has been the primary target, with chatbots expected to handle 80% of customer interactions, mirroring Klarna’s implementation where AI now manages two-thirds of customer inquiries 3.

The most substantial AI-driven productivity gains are occurring in front-office operations, which could account for up to $490 billion of the projected industry savings 2.

Klarna demonstrates the tangible impact of this transition, with average customer conversation times dropping dramatically from 11 minutes to just 2 minutes after AI implementation 3.

2️⃣ Companies discovering limitations of “AI-only” strategies

After aggressively implementing AI solutions, Klarna is now reversing course by hiring human customer service representatives, acknowledging that AI-driven interactions weren’t meeting quality expectations 4.
