Sweden’s Techarena secures $1.2m to scale events across Europe

Techarena, a Nordic-based innovation platform, has secured €1.1 million (US$1.2 million) in funding from Stockholm-based venture capital firm BackingMinds.

The investment will be used to expand Techarena’s events and initiatives aimed at promoting innovation across Europe.

Founded in 2014, Techarena connects startups and scaleups from over 120 countries with policymakers and industry leaders through various events.

The funding is expected to support Techarena’s international expansion and assist entrepreneurs through its platform.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ European innovation platforms filling critical ecosystem gaps

Techarena’s funding comes at a time when startups across Europe struggle with fragmented access to capital and networks beyond major hubs.

Despite record investments, 60% of European venture capital remains concentrated in just London, Paris, and Berlin, creating significant regional disparities in funding access 1.

This concentration problem persists even as European startups collectively raised €8.7 billion in a single quarter in 2019, showing robust investor interest but uneven distribution 1.

Innovation platforms like Techarena address this structural challenge by creating connections across borders, particularly important as fundraising remains the top concern for 58.1% of founders according to Slush’s 2025 survey 2.

The European Commission has recognized this gap, recently launching the “Choose Europe to Start and Scale” strategy to address regulatory fragmentation and enhance financing opportunities for startups across the continent 3.

2️⃣ The ROI of ecosystem building in European innovation

Techarena’s 600% revenue growth over three years exemplifies the expanding market for innovation platforms that facilitate connections between founders, investors, and policymakers.

This growth aligns with broader evidence that such ecosystem-building efforts deliver substantial returns. EU-funded startup programs have generated €520 billion in enterprise value from just €12 billion in public support 4.

These platforms help startups overcome key challenges beyond just funding, addressing talent acquisition problems (cited by 55% of startups) and regulatory complexities that affect 74% of rapidly scaling companies 5.
