Stripe, Advent bid $53b to take over PayPal

Stripe, an Irish-American payments company, and private equity firm Advent International have offered to buy PayPal Holdings for US$60.50 a share, valuing it at more than US$53 billion, according to two people familiar with the matter.

The proposal was submitted earlier this month and backed by about US$50 billion in committed bank financing.

The offer is about 28% above PayPal’s July 15 closing price. Under it, Stripe and Advent would own equal stakes in PayPal, though there is no certainty a deal will happen.

The reported approach comes as PayPal faces pressure in its core business.

Its branded checkout business grew 2% in the first quarter of 2026, the company warned that 2026 profit would fall from the prior year.

UBS data also showed Apple Pay had overtaken PayPal as the top checkout option.

PayPal said on April 29 that chief executive Enrique Lores reorganized the company into three business divisions after taking the role in March.

Stripe said in March that it was valued at US$159 billion, handled US$1.9 trillion in 2025 payment volume, and remained profitable.
