Stripe acquires Valora crypto wallet team for stablecoin push
The team behind Valora, a cryptocurrency payments app built on the Celo blockchain, is joining Stripe as it expands its stablecoin and blockchain efforts.
Valora became an independent company in 2021 after raising US$20 million, having originally spun out of cLabs, the development organization behind Celo.
Stripe confirmed the move and said Valora’s expertise in cryptocurrency wallet infrastructure and onchain developer tools will support its ongoing cryptocurrency initiatives.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Tempo enters a crowded field where technical specs matter less than distribution partnerships
- Stripe’s Tempo blockchain claims 100,000+ transactions per second and sub-second finality (the point at which a payment becomes irreversible) 1. Solana handles high throughput, while Tron leads stablecoin volume despite limits 1.
- Tempo ties into Stripe’s merchant base with gas fees payable in any stablecoin via an enshrined Automated Market Maker (AMM) that swaps on the user’s behalf 1. Merchants avoid a volatile native token. The company routes over the cheapest rail based on cost and speed 1. The Valora team adds mobile wallet know-how to Bridge’s stablecoin infrastructure and Privy’s wallet management for a full stack 1.
Payment platforms and cross-border fintechs can build fee arbitrage tools comparing Tempo against card rails
- Stripe supports USD Coin (USDC) on Ethereum and Solana plus Polygon and Base (an Ethereum layer-2 network), with settlement in USD to merchant balances 2. Substack reporting says Tempo will plug into these products, which creates a settlement path and room for routing based on real-time costs 1.
- Félix, a cross-border remittances provider, processed $3 billion using Stripe and Bridge 3. Developers can ship dashboards that flag when stablecoin settlement, including Tempo if available, beats card costs for foreign orders where foreign exchange fees apply 4. SaaS payment platforms can plug in Stripe’s stablecoin Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) 5. That lets them keep margin versus about 2.9% card fees and Stripe’s 1.5% stablecoin fee 1.
