US streaming platform Roku explores possible sale
Roku, a US streaming platform and device maker, is weighing options including a possible sale after talks with at least one US media company and considering a private investment in public equity transaction, according to people familiar with the matter.
No decision has been made. But Roku’s more than 100 million streaming households, advertising business, and viewing data have drawn interest from potential buyers, the sources said.
Roku had a market capitalization of about US$19.4 billion. Its shares jumped 22% after the news, and advertising generated US$613 million in first-quarter revenue, up 27% year on year.
The company last year also partnered with Amazon to let marketers buy ads on the Roku Channel, its free ad-supported streaming service.
In a recent comparable deal, Walmart paid US$2.3 billion for Vizio on Dec. 3, 2024, saying the acquisition would help accelerate Walmart’s advertising business through Vizio’s TV operating system and audience reach.
