Strategy posts $8.2b Q2 loss on bitcoin markdown

Strategy, a US software company and the largest holder of corporate bitcoin, reported a US$8.2 billion net loss in the second quarter.

The loss followed a US$8.32 billion unrealized markdown under fair-value accounting after bitcoin prices declined.

Under US accounting rules for crypto assets, unrealized price changes flow through earnings each quarter, so the loss mainly reflected a paper revaluation rather than large sales of Strategy’s bitcoin holdings.

Strategy held 843,775 bitcoin as of July 26, up 25% from the start of the year.

At current prices, those holdings are worth about US$54.8 billion, compared with an acquisition cost of US$63.7 billion.

The company said it raised US$17.06 billion through at-the-market stock offerings this year.

It also sold about US$218.4 million of bitcoin under its BTC Monetization Program to boost cash and help fund preferred stock dividends, increasing its US-dollar reserve to US$3.75 billion.

Strategy said that reserve is enough to cover more than 2.1 years of existing preferred dividend payments and interest obligations.
