Strategy buys 7,390 bitcoins for $765m in treasury push

Strategy, formerly MicroStrategy, bought 7,390 bitcoins for about US$764.9 million between May 12, 2025 and May 18, 2025, at an average price of US$103,498 per coin.

The company now holds 576,230 bitcoins worth over US$59 billion, with a total investment of US$40.2 billion and an average cost of US$69,726 per bitcoin.

Earlier in May 2025, Strategy also acquired 13,390 bitcoins for US$1.3 billion, now holding over 2.7% of bitcoin’s total supply of 21 million.

Despite reporting a US$4.2 billion Q1 loss due to unrealized bitcoin losses, analysts consider Strategy’s low debt and delayed obligations manageable.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Corporate bitcoin treasuries becoming a significant market force

The rapid expansion of corporate bitcoin holdings represents a structural shift in institutional crypto adoption.

Strategy’s (formerly MicroStrategy) accumulation of 576,230 BTC, equivalent to 2.7% of bitcoin’s total supply, illustrates the scale of this trend, with the company now controlling $59 billion in bitcoin assets 1.

This isn’t an isolated case, as research shows approximately 80 public companies now collectively hold 632,381 BTC worth $55.89 billion, creating a substantial pool of institutionally-controlled bitcoin 1.

The trend extends globally, with companies like Japanese investment firm Metaplanet accelerating purchases (adding 1,004 BTC recently) and new entrants including Cantor Fitzgerald, SoftBank, Bitfinex, and Tether planning a $3.6 billion bitcoin venture called Twenty One.

Analysts at Bernstein predict this corporate accumulation could add $330 billion to company bitcoin treasuries over the next five years, potentially creating persistent buying pressure independent of retail market cycles.

2️⃣ Corporate bitcoin strategies diverge as prices approach record levels

As bitcoin trades above $100,000, companies are adopting increasingly diverse approaches to their crypto treasury strategies.

While Strategy continues its aggressive accumulation with multiple Bitcoin purchases in May, purchasing 7,390 BTC at an average price of $103,498, other corporations have moderated their acquisition pace at elevated price levels 2.

Companies are employing a range of financing mechanisms to fund these purchases. Strategy alone is utilizing stock sales, preferred stock offerings, and convertible notes, with plans to raise up to $84 billion through 2027.
