Strategy adds 855 bitcoins in $75.3m purchase
Michael Saylor’s company, Strategy, added 855 bitcoins worth US$75.3 million just before last week’s market decline, bringing its total holdings to 713,502 bitcoins.
The firm acquired the bitcoins at an average price of US$87,974 each, funded through a stock sale.
Currently, bitcoin trades slightly above US$77,000, resulting in the company breaking even on its investments after around 5.5 years.
Strategy’s total bitcoin holdings are valued at around US$54.3 billion, with an average purchase price of US$76,052.
Following the recent price drop, Strategy’s shares fell 7.3% in premarket trading to US$138.80, hitting a multi-year low.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Strategy funds bitcoin buys by selling stock and raising a preferred-stock dividend rate
- Through its at-the-market (ATM) program (which lets a company sell newly issued shares into the open market over time), the company sold 673,527 shares for $106.1 million in net proceeds, then used $75.3 million of that to buy bitcoin 1.
- Management calls this a “flywheel” plan, issuing new equity and debt while betting bitcoin gains will beat its financing costs 2.
- Even as the common stock fell to a multi-year low, it raised the annual regular dividend on Variable Rate Series A Perpetual Stretch Preferred Stock (STRC), a preferred share class that pays a dividend and has no maturity date, to 11.25% from 11.00% 1.
- Outside funding matters more after operating cash flow turned negative in 2024, while the Altman Z-Score (a widely used measure of bankruptcy risk) has flagged higher financial risk 2.
A high-risk corporate bitcoin model
- For equity investors, the firm works like a leveraged stand-in for bitcoin, pairing its software business with a large bitcoin treasury position 3.
- Bitwise (a crypto asset manager), citing bitcointreasuries.net (a website that tracks corporate crypto holdings), counts 82 publicly listed companies worldwide with bitcoin on their balance sheets; it also cites Japan’s Meta Planet Inc. rising by more than 2,400% in 2024 after adopting a bitcoin standard 2.
- A Saylor quote cited by Bitwise from a recent fireside chat (an informal, interview-style discussion) with Bernstein analysts frames a long-term aim to become a “Bitcoin bank” or bitcoin finance company 2.
- With 713,502 BTC, the company could add stress to the market in a severe drawdown if it had to sell bitcoin to raise cash for obligations; one analysis puts serious trouble closer to $25,000 bitcoin or below 3.
