StraitsX, Thailand’s KBank partner for Singapore QR payments

Thailand’s Kasikornbank said it has expanded its Q Wallet app to let Thai travelers pay Singapore merchants by scanning GrabPay QR codes, with settlement handled through its blockchain-based Q-money, which interoperates with StraitsX’s XSGD stablecoin.

StraitsX is a Singapore-based major payment institution licensed by the Monetary Authority of Singapore and issuer of XSGD.

The companies said the service does not require users to exchange currency or open overseas bank accounts, and Singapore is the first overseas pilot market for Q Wallet.

KBank said the project is operating in the Bank of Thailand’s regulatory sandbox, while KBank and StraitsX are participating members of the Monetary Authority of Singapore’s BLOOM initiative.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

This tests new financial plumbing, not just a new app

  • The work centers on the settlement layer, the back-end system that moves money between financial institutions, with a goal of near-instant settlement for merchants 1.
  • Cross-border QR payments can feel quick at checkout, yet settlement between financial institutions can still take several days 2.
  • The build relies on two blockchains. Q-money runs on the Quarix network in Thailand. Singapore settlement uses the XSGD stablecoin on a dedicated Avalanche L1 chain, a custom blockchain built with Avalanche technology 2.
  • The GrabPay link builds on integration that started in 2018, when KBank and Grab shared plans to launch the “GrabPay by KBank” mobile wallet in Thailand, targeted for early 2019 3.

Stablecoins are moving from speculation to regulated payment infrastructure

  • This pilot fits into a wider push for regulated stablecoins plus compliance-aligned payment infrastructure 4, 5.
  • About 99% of stablecoins are USD-pegged. Local currency stablecoins like XSGD let businesses transact in their local currency while reducing foreign exchange risk 6, 5.
  • StraitsX plans to extend this payment corridor to Japan and Taiwan, using XSGD as the core settlement asset for a regional network 7.
  • Listing XSGD on global exchanges like Coinbase can broaden access and improve liquidity, enabling 24/7 on-chain foreign exchange transactions 5.
