STMicroelectronics, NUS launch edge AI lab in Singapore
STMicroelectronics and the National University of Singapore (NUS) launched the ST-NUS HELIX Corporate Lab in Singapore on August 24.
The four-year research initiative, supported under the Research, Innovation and Enterprise 2025 (RIE2025) plan, will develop edge AI hardware for embodied AI applications such as robots, humanoids, and drones.
Hosted at NUS’ College of Design and Engineering, with participation from the School of Computing, the lab will study memory-centric architectures, in-memory computing, and scalable compute-and-memory systems.
This approach can cut energy use and latency in edge AI by reducing data movement between memory and processors.
STMicroelectronics said it would provide a dedicated design chassis based on its P18 18nm fully depleted silicon on insulator (FD-SOI) technology and embedded phase-change memory.
The company said it had used this combination in microcontrollers that maintain low power while adding performance and memory for embedded systems.
Researchers from NUS and ST will also work on AI models, accelerator and chip architecture, intellectual property creation, demonstrations, and talent development.
