Stellantis deepens EV ties with China’s Leapmotor

Stellantis said on May 8 it will expand its partnership with China’s EV maker Leapmotor in Europe.

The owner of Jeep and Peugeot will add production of Leapmotor’s B10 and a jointly developed electric C-SUV sold under the Opel brand at its Zaragoza plant in Spain.

The companies also plan to cooperate on parts purchasing.

They are considering assigning more Leapmotor models to Stellantis’ Villaverde plant near Madrid from 2028.

The companies may also transfer ownership of the site to Leapmotor International, their Stellantis-led joint venture.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Spain fits the financial and political pressure around EV production

  • Spain was a calculated production choice. An earlier plan to assemble the B10 in Poland was dropped after the Chinese government privately told automakers to stop large investments in European countries that backed extra tariffs on Chinese-made EVs 1.
  • Building cars inside the European Union lets Stellantis sidestep tariffs on EVs imported from China. It also uses the company’s existing factories to supply buyers across Europe 2.

The agreement expands a China partnership model for Stellantis

  • The arrangement adds to a growing pattern where an established Western carmaker relies on a Chinese company’s EV technology and lower-cost production methods to compete in Europe 3.
  • Other Western automakers that have struggled to build lower-priced EVs could copy this approach. That would give Chinese companies a larger role as technology suppliers 4.
  • The Leapmotor venture could serve as a template for future work with other Chinese automakers, said Carlos Tavares, CEO of Stellantis 3.
