Stealth-mode startups rise 30% in Israel

A new report from Dealigence and Google for Startups shows a 30% rise in stealth-mode founders in Israel, with 1,054 entrepreneurs now building in secret despite ongoing instability.

Dealigence analyzed over 5,000 profiles of individuals identifying as stealth-mode entrepreneurs in Israel from May 2023 to April 2024.

Many of these ventures are expected to emerge publicly by 2025.

This could lead to a rise in early-stage funding and new company announcements.

One-third of these founders are serial entrepreneurs, 60% have technical backgrounds, and a small but notable percentage come from Big Tech and military service.

Israel has 5.5 times more stealth entrepreneurs per capita than the US, showing strong entrepreneurial momentum in a small but active tech scene.

Founders are staying quiet due to idea theft fears, AI competition, and local conflict, with fundraising often unreported.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Israel’s military-to-startup pipeline fuels resilient entrepreneurship

The surge in stealth-mode founders reflects Israel’s unique innovation ecosystem that continues to thrive despite regional challenges.

A significant portion of the stealth entrepreneurs identified in the Dealigence report came from IDF backgrounds, continuing a well-established pattern of military service as a launching pad for tech careers.

This military connection has historically been a cornerstone of Israel’s tech success, with Unit 8200 (military intelligence) alone having produced over 1,000 companies including notable successes like Waze and Check Point 1.

The military’s emphasis on independence, problem-solving, and innovation translates directly to entrepreneurial skills, creating a continuous pipeline of tech talent with specialized knowledge.

Even during periods of extended reserve duty and geopolitical turmoil, this deeply ingrained entrepreneurial mindset appears to sustain Israel’s startup formation rate, helping explain why Israel maintains 5.5 times more stealth entrepreneurs per capita than the US.

2️⃣ Strategic advantages of stealth mode reflect market adaptation
