US startup Luma AI nets $900m led by Saudi AI firm Humain

Luma AI has secured US$900 million in series C funding led by Humain, with participation from AMD, Amazon, Andreessen Horowitz, Amplify Partners, and Matrix Partners.

Luma AI, based in the US, develops multimodal AI systems that process video, audio, and language data.

The company will use the funding to advance its goal of building general-purpose AI and will become a customer of Project Halo, a 2-gigawatt AI supercluster being constructed by Humain in Saudi Arabia.

Project Halo is set to be one of the largest AI compute clusters globally and aims to support large-scale AI model training.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Project Halo’s readiness will decide if this is real or hype

  • News puts Luma AI as the ‘primary customer’ for Project Halo, Humain’s planned 2-gigawatt AI supercluster in Saudi Arabia 1. No public info confirms the build, a launch window, or chip orders beyond loose mentions of AMD and Nvidia ties 2.
  • With no launch date, Luma AI’s plan to train on ‘a quadrillion tokens of multimodal data’ feels distant 3. Meta’s 1-gigawatt Prometheus plan and Microsoft’s Nvidia rollouts set the bar, yet Halo’s timing muddies whether Luma can run big jobs or if the money covers current work 2.
  • A valuation above $4 billion 2 raises the question of whether Luma AI can scale Ray3, its in-house generative video model, beyond entertainment and ads before rivals such as OpenAI’s Sora 2 or Google’s Veo 3 move ahead 32.

Arabic AI openings via Humain Create

  • Humain Create builds Arabic and regional models plus targets ‘the world’s first Arabic video model’ 2. That creates demand for Arabic datasets, cultural annotation, and safety benchmarking 2.
  • Saudi Arabia’s Etimad portal is the centralized government e-procurement site 4. It lists AI tenders with bids for platform work, data strategy, and research infrastructure through late 2025 5. Firms in labeling, evaluation, or culturally specific moderation can prepare for MENA contracts as Humain expands Arabic-model work.
  • Emphasis on ‘cultural representation’ plus gaps outside the US and Asia gives suppliers with Middle Eastern language depth, local context, or safety know-how an edge over generic shops 2.
