Starlink rival AST SpaceMobile launches satellite for mobile service

AST SpaceMobile has launched its largest satellite, BlueBird 6, from India as part of its push to offer space-based mobile connectivity.

The Texas-based company used the Indian Space Research Organization’s LVM3 rocket for the launch.

AST SpaceMobile, which currently has five smaller satellites in orbit, plans to launch up to 60 more next-generation satellites in 2026.

The company has agreements with AT&T, Verizon, Vodafone, and other mobile providers to extend coverage to areas with limited or no connectivity.

It is expects to begin service in parts of the US and four other countries in early 2026.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

AST SpaceMobile’s 2026 launch timeline lacks crucial manufacturing and funding details

  • AST SpaceMobile plans early 2026 service with 40 spacecraft finished, five launches slated for late first quarter (Q1) 2026, and 45 to 60 in orbit by year-end 1.
  • Output grows to six per month by late 2025 through a 95% vertically integrated process (the company makes most parts in-house), with capacity of about three via SpaceX Falcon 9 and eight using Blue Origin New Glenn rockets 1.
  • Cash stood at $3.2 billion on September 30, 2025, which the company says covers build and launch for more than 100 satellites, extending well past the first 60 1.
  • Contracted revenue tops $1 billion, with a $175 million prepayment from Saudi Telecom Group (a major telecom operator in Saudi Arabia), which lowers risk for this rollout 1.

Direct-to-device developers should track Android’s satellite API roadmap for app timing

  • If service starts in early 2026, developers can ship space-based messaging and emergency features plus offline sync 1. Timing hinges on when Android opens satellite Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) to third-party apps.
  • Android 15 adds satellite support with APIs such as ServiceState.isUsingNonTerrestrialNetwork() for detecting a non-terrestrial network (NTN) link 2. It also enables SMS and MMS, plus Rich Communication Services (RCS), over that connection 2.
  • Access today focuses on system apps and carrier or device-maker layers, so developers should watch Android 16 and later for wider third-party hooks 2.
  • Investors in productivity, messaging, or Internet of Things (IoT) firms should map which holdings gain from standard mobile OS APIs that add satellite access.
