Stargate reportedly exploring UK investment for AI expansion

The Stargate project, a US$500 billion data center initiative backed by OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle, is exploring investment opportunities in the UK, according to the Financial Times.

The project aims to expand its AI infrastructure through international locations.

The UK is positioning itself as an AI hub, with plans for pro-innovation regulations, public data access for researchers, and designated data center zones.

Other locations under consideration include Germany and France.

The Stargate project was first announced in January by US President Donald Trump as a private sector initiative to boost AI infrastructure and global competitiveness.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ A new phase in the global AI infrastructure arms race

The Stargate project represents a significant escalation in the global competition for AI infrastructure dominance, with implications extending beyond the US.

While the initial $500 billion US announcement captured headlines, it has triggered responsive investments across Europe, with France pledging €109 billion for AI development and announcing a partnership with the UAE to build a one-gigawatt AI data center 1.

European countries are strategically positioning themselves in this race, with the EU launching initiatives to bolster AI capabilities while the UK has implemented an AI Opportunities Action Plan with 50 recommendations for integrating AI across sectors 2.

The scale of these investments reflects the growing recognition that AI infrastructure is becoming essential for national competitiveness, comparable to electricity and internet infrastructure in previous technological revolutions 3.

For context, European AI startups raised $3.4 billion in Q1 2025 alone, a 55% increase from the previous year, demonstrating the region’s growing commitment to competing in the AI space 4.

2️⃣ The critical role of energy and computing resources in AI infrastructure decisions

Stargate’s interest in the UK, Germany, and France likely centers on access to reliable energy resources and regulatory support for data centers, which are becoming increasingly critical bottlenecks in AI development.

Europe faces challenges in securing sufficient computing capacity and energy supply for AI development, with reports indicating that coordinated investment is needed to avoid technological dependence on the US and China 3.
