Standard Chartered to cut 15% of support roles for AI
Standard Chartered said on May 19 it will cut more than 15% of corporate function roles by 2030 as it expands AI use in support operations.
The changes will affect a workforce that included 52,271 back-office staff.
The bank expects role reductions rather than immediate layoffs.
Support functions including risk management and regulatory compliance set to shrink as more tasks are automated, said CEO Bill Winters.
The move comes as global banks including HSBC and Goldman Sachs step up automation, and Standard Chartered used its investor event in Hong Kong to set targets including 15% return on tangible equity by 2028 and 18% by 2030.
