Standard Chartered to buy Zodia crypto custody arm

Standard Chartered, a London-based bank, said on May 18 it plans to buy the crypto custody business of majority-owned subsidiary Zodia Custody after its non-binding offer was accepted by the unit’s other shareholders and noteholders.

The bank said combining Zodia’s custody arm with its own digital asset operations would support an expansion into markets including the UK and Australia.

Zodia’s infrastructure business will continue as software firm Zodia Solutions under CEO Julian Sawyer and will be majority-owned by Standard Chartered’s venture arm, while talks continue on which existing investors will remain shareholders, including Northern Trust, Emirates NBD, National Australia Bank, and SBI Holdings.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Custody is moving into the bank itself

  • Zodia put the shift plainly. “Custody is moving into global banks” 1.
  • Standard Chartered plans to fold Zodia Custody’s regulated business into its digital asset arm after its non-binding offer was accepted, pending regulatory approval.
  • That would give institutional clients such as asset managers, banks, and large investors one custody service for traditional assets and digital assets 2.
  • The plan puts custody inside the bank’s day-to-day operations, alongside trading and settlement, instead of leaving it as a separate project 3.

A split opens the door for bank-ready digital asset tools

  • The spinout of Zodia Solutions creates a business-to-business (B2B) technology company separate from the regulated custody unit 1.
  • It sells white-label tools that let banks or enterprises launch branded digital asset services without building the system themselves 4.
  • The model sells the tools other firms need, which lowers entry costs and could heat up competition in digital asset services.
  • Because the platform was built inside a regulated financial institution, other firms may get to market faster with governance, compliance workflows and security controls already in place 1.
