Square Peg-backed HR tech startup Retrain.ai shuts down

Retrain.ai, a startup focused on AI-driven employee management solutions, has ceased operations this year.

The New York-based company laid off its 20 employees and is reportedly looking for a buyer for its technology.

Founded in 2020 by Dr. Shay David, Isabelle Bichler-Eliasaf, and Avi Simon, Retrain.ai developed a platform to analyze labor market data, identify skill gaps, and recommend workforce development strategies, including personalized training and internal mobility.

The company raised US$34 million from investors such as Radical Ventures, Hetz Ventures, Square Peg, TechAviv, and Splunk Ventures.

Despite its initial success, Retrain.ai has now shut down after five years.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ AI startup failure rates remain persistently high despite substantial funding

Retrain.ai’s shutdown reflects a broader pattern in the AI startup ecosystem, where approximately 90% of AI startups fail within their first five years despite significant investment.

This failure rate substantially exceeds the average for traditional startups, with studies showing that lack of product-market fit is the primary cause (42% of failures), followed by unsustainable business models (22%) and high development costs (16%) 1.

The company raised $34 million but still couldn’t achieve sustainable growth, mirroring the experience of other AI startups that secured substantial funding only to shut down operations within a few years.

Multiple analyses across 2024-2025 consistently show that AI companies face unique challenges beyond typical startup hurdles, including unrealistic expectations about AI capabilities, difficulties in data management, and the high cost of specialized technical talent 2.

Companies in the HR tech space face particular pressure to demonstrate immediate ROI, as many executives remain skeptical about the practical applications of AI for workforce management despite vendor promises.

2️⃣ The HR technology market is increasingly saturated with AI-powered solutions

Retrain.ai entered an extremely competitive landscape where numerous established players had already developed AI-powered employee management solutions with similar capabilities.

By 2025, the HR software market had become crowded with solutions like Workday, BambooHR, and Leapsome offering AI-driven tools for skills analysis, workforce planning, and employee development 3.
