Spotify to raise premium subscription prices starting September

Spotify will increase the monthly price of its premium individual subscription in certain markets starting September.

The Swedish music-streaming company announced the change on August 4, 2025.

Spotify did not specify which markets will see the price hike or the new pricing details.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Spotify’s pricing strategy shifted from decade-long stability to rapid increases

Spotify maintained the same $9.99 individual plan price for 12 years from its 2011 U.S. launch until July 2023, but has now implemented two price increases in less than two years12.

The individual plan jumped from $9.99 to $10.99 in July 2023, then to $11.99 in 2024, representing a 20% increase over just two years3.

This shift from price stability to frequent adjustments reflects a change in Spotify’s business strategy, moving away from prioritizing subscriber growth at all costs.

The company now faces a competitive positioning challenge, as its individual plan at $11.99 costs more than Apple Music’s $10.99, and its family plan at $19.99 exceeds Apple Music’s $16.991.

2️⃣ Industry data shows price increases directly impact user acquisition

When Amazon Music Unlimited raised prices in May 2022, it experienced a 41% drop in Prime Plan sign-ups and an overall 12% decrease in new subscribers during the three weeks following the increase4.

This evidence highlights the immediate subscriber acquisition risk that Spotify and other streaming services face when implementing price hikes.

The broader streaming industry is prioritizing profitability over growth, with major services raising prices after years of focusing on user acquisition5.

Disney reported that its streaming services achieved profitability largely due to price increases, illustrating how the industry views these adjustments as essential for financial sustainability rather than optional revenue optimization5.
