Spotify shares fall after weak Q2 outlook

Spotify forecast second-quarter operating income and subscriber additions below Wall Street estimates, and shares falling about 6% in premarket trading.

It expects operating income of 630 million euros (US$738 million) and 299 million premium subscribers, below analyst estimates of 684 million euros (US$801 million) and 302 million subscribers.

Revenue guidance of 4.8 billion euros (US$5.62 billion) was near estimates of 4.8 billion euros (US$5.59 billion) while monthly active user guidance of 778 million beat forecasts of 773 million.

In Q1, Spotify reported 715 million euros (US$837 million) in operating income on 4.5 billion euros (US$5.3 billion) in revenue with 293 million premium subscribers.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Why Spotify gave cautious guidance

  • First-quarter operating income reached 715 million euros (US$837 million), helped by about 49 million euros (US$57.4 million) in lower social charges tied to moves in Spotify’s share price 1.
  • The softer second-quarter profit outlook comes from higher marketing spend for new features plus more research and development (R&D) work on longer-term AI efforts 1.
  • Management said premium subscriber gains should lean toward the second half of 2025, with more net additions expected later in the year than in the current quarter 1.

How Spotify is expanding with a steady workforce

  • Spotify may be sketching a path for mature tech firms that want more growth without adding many employees, using AI to lift efficiency 1.
  • Headcount has stayed about flat and even dipped a little, while computing capacity per employee has gone up. Spotify said productivity measures are doubling 1.
  • That breaks from the usual tech playbook of hiring more engineers to scale. It suggests some platform companies can get more done through AI tools and automation instead of growing staff in step with revenue or users 1.
