Spotify said to raise US subscription prices in Q1 2026

Spotify plans to raise US subscription prices in Q1 2026, according to sources familiar with the matter.

This would be the first price increase in the US since July 2024.

Spotify has already raised prices in markets including the UK, Switzerland, and Australia in recent months.

A standard US Spotify subscription currently costs US$11.99 per month, up from US$9.99 at launch 14 years ago.

Analysts say a US$1 monthly increase could add US$500 million to Spotify’s annual revenue.

Record labels have urged streaming platforms to raise prices, citing inflation and lower subscription fees compared to video services.

Spotify declined to comment.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Price hike success depends on unpublished churn data from 2024

  • In 2024, Spotify raised US prices 1. It also lifted prices in France plus the Benelux countries (Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg) 1. The company has not released churn or downgrade rates after these moves.
  • Management says Benelux changes led to no unusual churn 1. Earnings still omit US retention and downgrade metrics.
  • Analyst models for a $1 U.S. increase assume small losses, but without July 2024 churn and downgrade data, investors cannot estimate net revenue or gauge whether another $1 holds. The CEO says retention drives the subscription business at scale 1.

Ad-supported tier expansion creates inventory opportunities for streaming audio buyers

  • Q4 2024 ended with 425 million ad-supported users worldwide 2, equal to 63% of Monthly Active Users, with this segment up 12% year over year 2.
  • Price hikes often push some listeners to churn or downgrade, so a Q1 2025 increase could move more users to the free tier and expand ad inventory 3.
  • Advertisers and audio demand-side platforms (software that lets advertisers buy digital audio ads programmatically) should plan for more streaming audio supply in 2025 2. Video podcast inventory is also growing, with over 270 million users having watched video podcasts 2 and video consumption rising 20x faster than audio-only 1.
  • Ad-supported revenue grew 7% year over year in Q4 2024 2, while automated sales channels drove most ad growth 2, which lets programmatic buyers tap the scale of Spotify’s automated platforms.
