Spotify, Merlin partner on paid AI covers preview

Spotify said on Aug. 4 that it was preparing a research preview of a paid AI tool that would let some users create artist-approved covers and remixes.

The company also said Merlin, a licensing partner representing independent labels and distributors, has joined the project alongside Universal Music Group.

The partnership brings more than 30,000 labels from Merlin’s network into the initiative.

Spotify said the product will initially launch without its full music catalog and will include only artists who choose to participate.

The company said participating artists will receive credit and compensation, but it did not provide a launch date for the research preview.

The update comes as AI-generated music continues to grow on streaming platforms.

In July, Deezer said more than half of its daily track uploads were AI-generated.
