Spotify CEO criticizes Apple over EU compliance failures
Spotify CEO Daniel Ek has accused Apple of failing to comply with the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), calling the company’s efforts a “farce.”
He criticized Apple’s “pattern of delaying and stalling” during a meeting with European Commission officials in Brussels.
The DMA, which aims to curb anti-competitive behavior, allows fines of up to 10% of a company’s global revenue for non-compliance.
EU competition chief Teresa Ribera is expected to decide on Apple’s compliance by the end of March.
Ek argued that Apple’s plans for alternative app stores still impose fees and conditions that harm developers. Apple has not directly responded but has previously cited risks from third-party stores.
The EU fined Apple €1.8 billion (US$1.89 billion) last year over a Spotify complaint about restrictive App Store practices, and investigations continue.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has threatened retaliatory tariffs against the EU over what he calls “disproportionate” fines.
