Spanish bank BBVA, OpenAI partner on AI for customers, staff
BBVA (Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria) and OpenAI have announced a strategic partnership to develop new AI-powered tools for banking.
BBVA, a Spain-based bank, said the agreement follows nearly two years of joint work, and will focus on integrating OpenAI’s technology into its products and operations.
The partnership includes plans to create an AI-powered conversational assistant to support customer interactions, as well as tools to help employees with daily tasks and risk analysis.
BBVA will expand the use of ChatGPT Enterprise to all 120,000 of its employees, after an initial trial with 11,000 staff.
The bank has also demonstrated a ChatGPT-integrated app for its digital banks in Italy and Germany.
Financial details of the agreement were not disclosed.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
BBVA’s employee rollout shows measurable AI productivity gains, while customer-facing rollout details remain limited
- The rollout to 11,000 staff on ChatGPT Enterprise (OpenAI’s business-grade version of ChatGPT with enhanced privacy and admin controls) produced concrete gains 12. Eight in ten save more than two hours a week, over 2,900 custom GPTs now support legal, marketing, or finance work, and daily use tops 80%.
- BBVA faces hurdles wiring ChatGPT Enterprise into core banking, risk, or compliance platforms to use proprietary data 2. The partnership announcement lists a customer assistant but gives no timeline, accuracy metrics, or pilot data. BBVA has not shared quantified outcomes for ChatGPT‑integrated app demos in Italy or Germany, or for risk analysis accuracy gains. Nordea labels this gap ‘Horizon 1’ versus ‘Horizon 2’, and says most organizations remain in Horizon 1 3.
AI governance and integration vendors can capitalize on European banks following BBVA’s enterprise AI expansion
- BBVA plans to move from 11,000 to 120,000 ChatGPT Enterprise users, and other European Union (EU) banks are running pilots 3. Vendors in AI governance or security, plus evaluation or localization (language and market adaptation), have near-term openings. Banks navigate a “multi-dimensional regulatory load” that requires explainability, cybersecurity, human oversight, and operational resilience for AI systems 3.
- Integration specialists and cloud partners can help connect ChatGPT Enterprise to complex internal systems 2. This is a consulting or implementation opening. Vendors can map which European banks are piloting OpenAI or comparable platforms in 2024-2025 with emphasis on red-teaming (adversarial stress-testing) and bias testing, plus compliance monitoring that BBVA stresses in its responsible AI approach 1.
