SpaceX, Tesla propose $55b chip plant in Texas
SpaceX and Tesla have proposed a US$55 billion semiconductor plant in Grimes County, Texas, as Elon Musk looks to secure chip supply for AI and other computing needs.
The project, called Terafab, would be built in phases as a chip fabrication and advanced computing complex.
SpaceX said total spending could reach US$119 billion if later phases go ahead.
Local officials are expected to review a property tax abatement for the site in June.
The plan would reduce reliance on suppliers such as Samsung and TSMC as the US pushes to expand domestic chip production amid geopolitical and supply chain risks.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
The investment would top the CHIPS and Science Act’s main funding pool
- Terafab’s proposed US$55 billion starting investment is larger than the roughly US$52.7 billion Congress authorized through the CHIPS and Science Act 1.
- If the project reaches its projected US$119 billion total, it would near the amount Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the world’s largest contract chipmaker, has pledged for its Arizona campus, a multi-factory build planned over many years 2.
- The site would sit on remediated industrial land, cleaned for reuse after earlier industrial activity, at and around a former coal-fired power station at Gibbons Creek Reservoir in Grimes County, Texas, about 90 miles northeast of Austin 1.
Intel’s role remains unconfirmed in the available material
- The filing says the project would be a multi-phase chip fabrication and advanced computing complex. Later stages depend on approvals and further construction 3.
- The plan could reduce reliance on suppliers such as Samsung or TSMC, though the available material does not confirm a broad Intel tie-up 3.
- A claim that Intel has “officially joined” Terafab is not backed up by the other provided material on the Grimes County filing 4.
- That leaves too little support to describe Intel’s role as a confirmed deep partnership covering manufacturing processes or chip-packaging technology for the facility 4.
- Ideas about a new captive-lite model or gains for Intel’s foundry business remain speculative because the filing-focused coverage does not establish a verified structured partnership 5.
