SpaceX targets self-sustaining moon city within 10 years
SpaceX CEO Elon Musk announced that the company will prioritize building a self-sustaining city on the moon, aiming to achieve this within less than 10 years.
The company has reportedly told investors that it will focus on lunar missions first, with an uncrewed lunar landing targeted for March 2027.
Additionally, SpaceX recently agreed to acquire xAI, with the combined valuation of the rocket, satellite, and AI firms estimated at around US$1.2 trillion.

SpaceX’s moon pivot is driven by NASA pressure and technical delays
- NASA pressure pushed the Moon to the top of the list. The acting administrator publicly faulted SpaceX for slipping its Artemis 3 lunar lander schedule and said he planned to “open up” the 2021 Artemis 3 lander contract to competition 1.
- Schedule risk ties to unfinished hardware. SpaceX still has not completed the in-orbit refueling capability Starship needs to reach the moon. NASA officials expected an in-orbit propellant transfer demonstration in 2025. They now say it is slipping, while SpaceX targets in-space propellant-transfer flight tests in 2026 1.
- Money raises the stakes. The lunar lander work sits under a NASA contract worth up to $4.5 billion. As of Oct. 30, 2025, NASA had paid SpaceX about $2.7 billion for Human Landing System (HLS) work and was obligated to pay about another $300 million for milestones SpaceX achieved 2.

- That mission can cut perceived risk. It would confirm Starship can run complex flights for high-paying government customers, while moving attention away from a Mars-first bet to a working heavy-lift platform 4.
- Moon logistics also connect to AI plans. SpaceX has tied a SpaceX–xAI tie-up to “orbital data centers” (computing facilities in space that would process and store data). SpaceX has also said Starship HLS needs multiple refueling launches, yet the “about ten launches” figure comes from a SpaceX representative in 2024 and does not appear in the cited Artemis program overview 5.
