SpaceX targets orbital AI test by late 2027, sources say
SpaceX told investors in New York before its initial public offering that it aims to test space-based AI computing infrastructure by late 2027.
The timeline is earlier than the “as early as 2028” target outlined in the company’s IPO filing, according to two people who attended the presentations.
President Gwynne Shotwell and CFO Bret Johnsen said the first launches would be demonstrators before any broader commercial rollout, the attendees said.
The company is seeking to raise US$75 billion in the offering at a US$1.75 trillion valuation, with shares scheduled to begin trading on the Nasdaq under SPCX at a target price of US$135.
The prospectus ties orbital AI computing to Starship and says deployment at scale depends on full reusability and rapid turnaround.
Any plan to launch up to 1 million data-center satellites would also face Federal Communications Commission licensing and five-year deorbit rules for low-Earth orbit spacecraft, with potential case-by-case scrutiny for large constellations.
