SpaceX has held talks with Charter Communications, a US cable and internet provider, on a mobile partnership to route some Starlink traffic through Charter’s ground network.

A deal could expand SpaceX’s effort to sell mobile service directly to consumers beyond its Starlink Mobile arrangement with T-Mobile.

The companies have described direct-to-cell capabilities as supporting texting, calling, and internet browsing.

SpaceX has said the service complements terrestrial mobile networks and that 650 satellites currently support its US direct-to-cell service.

It has also been expanding its mobile spectrum holdings, including 15 megahertz of nationwide unpaired AWS-3 uplink licenses through a US$2.6 billion stock deal with EchoStar, alongside earlier AWS-4 and H-block purchases tied to its direct-to-cell constellation.

Charter already uses Wi-Fi and leased network access from T-Mobile US and Verizon Communications for its Spectrum Mobile service.
