Financial filings showed SpaceX spent US$295 million on Tesla Megapacks in the quarter ended June 30, bringing first-half purchases to US$329 million.

The batteries help power Colossus data centers in Greater Memphis used by SpaceXAI, Elon Musk’s AI company formerly known as xAI.

Colossus began at a former Electrolux site in South Memphis and was initially expected to need 150 megawatts of electricity.

Its maximum consumption later rose to 250 megawatts, while a second facility expanded into Southaven, Mississippi.

The Memphis-area operations also use dozens of gas turbines that have drawn complaints about noise and air pollution.

Shelby County granted a local air permit in July 2025, but the NAACP and other groups sued in federal court in Mississippi, alleging the company lacked required federal Clean Air Act permits.

On SpaceX’s second-quarter earnings call, Musk said the company planned to have 20 gigawatts of power and cooling operational by the end of next year.

He added that something closer to 15 gigawatts at the power plant level was more likely.

SpaceX bought US$506 million of Megapacks and US$131 million of Cybertrucks from Tesla in 2025.

It disclosed no further Cybertruck purchases in the first half of 2026.
