SpaceX seeks approval for 1 million AI data center satellites

SpaceX has filed with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to deploy a satellite constellation of up to 1 million units to support solar-powered data centers for AI applications.

The plan aims to use near-constant solar energy to power data centers in orbit, potentially lowering costs and reducing environmental impact compared to terrestrial facilities.

Starlink currently has around 9,500 satellites in orbit, with prior approval sought for up to 42,000.

The new plan depends on the development of the reusable Starship rocket, which has completed 11 test launches since 2023.

SpaceX is also reportedly in talks with xAI about a potential merger, while regulatory approval remains required.
