SpaceX said to invest $2b in Musk’s xAI

SpaceX has invested US$2 billion in AI startup xAI. The funding is part of a larger US$5 billion equity round.

The investment follows xAI’s merger with X, bringing the combined company’s valuation to US$113 billion.

The Grok chatbot, which supports Starlink, may also be integrated into Tesla’s Optimus robots.

Neither SpaceX nor xAI have commented on the deal.

Despite concerns about Grok’s performance, xAI continues to invest heavily in model training and infrastructure.

The move aligns with Elon Musk’s aim for xAI to compete with companies like OpenAI.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Musk’s AI strategy evolved from defensive investments to offensive competition

Elon Musk’s approach to AI has undergone a dramatic shift over the past decade, transforming from cautionary investment to competitive development.

In 2014-2015, Musk invested in DeepMind and co-founded OpenAI not primarily for financial returns but to monitor AI development, explicitly citing “Terminator” scenarios as his motivation 12.

His initial $1 billion investment in OpenAI in 2015 was positioned as promoting “friendly AI” that would benefit humanity rather than pose existential risks 3.

Now, with xAI receiving a $2 billion investment from SpaceX and valued at $113 billion after merging with X, Musk has fully pivoted to building competitive AI technology despite his earlier warnings.

This evolution reflects the broader AI industry’s shift from cautious research to aggressive commercialization, with the global generative AI market projected to grow from $66 billion to over $442 billion by 2031 4.

2️⃣ Cross-integration strategy creates a self-reinforcing “Musk ecosystem”

The $2 billion investment from SpaceX into xAI reveals an emerging business model where Musk’s companies increasingly function as an integrated ecosystem rather than standalone entities.
