SpaceX, Elon Musk’s US aerospace company, plans a US$100 billion Starbase campus in Vermilion Parish, Louisiana, according to an Aug. 25 announcement from Louisiana Economic Development.

The company said the site would support Starship operations.

In the announcement, Louisiana Economic Development said the campus would support “thousands of launches annually,” while Musk said in a SpaceX video that the company would bring “probably 10,000” jobs to Louisiana.

Before launches can proceed, a new commercial space site in the US would typically need Federal Aviation Administration licenses.

Federal Aviation Administration environmental reviews have previously required SpaceX to take more than 75 mitigation actions for another project.

A coastal Louisiana site may also require permits under the state’s coastal management process.

The move follows scrutiny of SpaceX’s Starbase in Texas, including lawsuits, fines, and a 2024 state notice of violation related to water pollution.
