SpaceX pitches itself as AI company in IPO
SpaceX pitched itself to IPO investors as an AI company in a filing released on May 21.
The company said AI represents US$26.5 trillion of a US$28.5 trillion total addressable market as it seeks support for its public listing.
The filing said enterprise AI applications make up most of that opportunity, while space, Starlink internet, and mobile services account for nearly US$2 trillion.
xAI, which now sits at the core of SpaceX’s AI business after a February all-stock deal, reported US$3.2 billion in 2025 revenue and a US$6.4 billion operating loss, up from about US$1.6 billion a year earlier.
SpaceX also said a chip factory project with Tesla could cost more than US$119 billion.
Grok and the company’s AI safety measures have drawn criticism from nonprofits that asked investors to seek more disclosure.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
The price of chipmaking and AI safety failures
- The filing puts the chip project above US$119 billion. Analysts place Elon Musk’s full manufacturing plan far higher at US$5 trillion to US$13 trillion in capital spending 1.
- Analysts also warn about execution risk. The plan names no production-ready process technology partner, a company with proven manufacturing technology for advanced chips. They call that essential for a leading-edge chip fab, or semiconductor manufacturing plant 2.
- Concerns about Grok’s safety record reach beyond nonprofits. SpaceX disclosed several lawsuits and warned of US investigations tied to claims that its AI products created nonconsensual explicit images, including images involving children 3.
- At least 37 US attorneys general pushed for stronger safeguards. As of January, xAI had only “two or three” people working on safety 4.
From renting AI infrastructure to owning it
- SpaceX frames its IPO around AI as models put more pressure on global computing and energy supplies 2.
- The proposed “Terafab” chip factory would pull more of the supply chain in-house. The goal is less dependence on external foundries, which are contract chip manufacturers such as TSMC and Samsung 5.
- The idea is also gaining ground in Washington. The Pentagon, the US Department of Defense, cleared xAI’s Grok for classified use while officials debated its looser controls and some viewed rival providers as too “woke” 6.
- That overlap could leave large technology companies operating more like self-sufficient digital states, with control over their own core infrastructure.
