SpaceX IPO faces uncertainty over Musk’s Mars plans
SpaceX’s potential IPO faces uncertainty as some investors and analysts say CEO Elon Musk’s ambitions for a Mars mission add risk to the offering.
Investors are concerned Musk’s Mars plans could increase risk, even as analysts note Starlink’s growth could drive interest.
SpaceX, based in California, develops rockets and operates the Starlink satellite internet network.
The company is valued at over US$180 billion after a recent tender offer.
Musk has not confirmed any specific IPO timeline, and SpaceX has not commented.
In 2024, SpaceX completed more than 90 launches, mostly for its Starlink network, which generated about US$6.6 billion in revenue, according to a company presentation.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Starlink’s profit picture stays fuzzy despite $6.6B 2024 revenue estimate
- Estimates put 2024 revenue near $6.6 billion 1 and SpaceX shares no Starlink financials 1.
- Breakeven on Earnings before interest and taxes and depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) minus capital expenditures (CapEx) arrived in late 2023, and estimates pegged 2024 EBITDA at $3.8 billion 1. SpaceX has not confirmed margins or if cash flows are insulated from Mars capital needs, which clouds IPO timing.
- Annual ARPU fell from $1,826 in 2023 to a projected $1,789 in 2024 2. Lower priced markets now make up about half of users, with France at $45 per month and the U.S. at $120, which pressures margins.
Alternative data firms can sell Starlink network scorecards
- At least 32 states and territories include Low Earth Orbit (LEO) systems in Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) proposals 3. In parts of Southern Europe Starlink competes with fixed broadband 4. Buyers want Key Performance Indicator (KPI) dashboards on adoption and speeds, plus latency and uptime that SpaceX does not publish.
- Analytics groups with Content Delivery Network (CDN) providers can build datasets on subscriber growth, satellite count. They can add ground station density for institutional and enterprise buyers. There were 6,751 satellites in orbit in February 2025 5.
- Ookla (the company behind Speedtest) says median download speeds rose from 54 megabits per second (Mbps) to 105 Mbps between Q3 2022 and Q1 2025 5. That gives third-party tracking a use case ahead of a possible IPO.
