SpaceX in talks with Saudi wealth fund over $5b IPO stake: sources

SpaceX has held talks with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund about PIF taking an anchor stake of about US$5.0 billion in SpaceX’s planned IPO, according to two people familiar with the matter.

The sources said PIF already owns just under 1% of SpaceX and is considering a larger commitment that would partly prevent dilution.

SpaceX has also been sounding out other potential anchor investors ahead of a stock market debut, and it aims to raise about US$75.0 billion, the sources said.

SpaceX has filed confidential IPO paperwork with the US Securities and Exchange Commission and is targeting a launch later this year, the sources said.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Saudi Arabia is thinking beyond rockets

  • The Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) stake under discussion could fit Saudi Arabia’s national plan to become a global leader in artificial intelligence 1.
  • PIF is building its own AI company, HUMAIN, with work focused on data centers plus advanced AI models 2.
  • SpaceX’s valuation leans on long-term projects such as orbital data centers for AI workloads, which makes the stake a wager on future infrastructure 3.
  • The investment also lines up with Vision 2030, which aims to shift the economy away from oil through spending on technology sectors 4.

This IPO could reshape what a tech conglomerate looks like

  • If it succeeds, the targeted $75 billion fundraise would set a record and beat Saudi Aramco’s $29 billion listing 5.
  • Public investors would buy more than a space business, since the broader entity now includes social media platform X (formerly Twitter) plus artificial intelligence business xAI 6.
  • The structure brings unusual exposure because the business depends on U.S. government contracts, with $6 billion won from agencies such as NASA and the Defense Department over the past five years 6.
